Dydd Santes Dwynwen :)

So it’s Burns Night in Scotland, and here in Wales? It’s St Dwynwens Day (Dydd Santes Dwynwen)….the Welsh equivalent of Valentines Day! We’re quite lucky really to have two days devoted to our loved ones. While I haven’t received any flowers or chocolates I did get a lovely email from the OH (in all honesty I didn’t even realise what day it was until this point).

But so many people I have spoken to today still seem unaware that it’s St Dwynwens day, or even that such a day exists. So, I thought I’d share the story!

St Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers. Apparently she was betrothed by her father to an eligible batchelor but in love with someone else, so she asked God to help her forget her love (very loyal of her, sign of the times I think! Nowadays most girls would give two fingers to dear papa and run off with the other bloke!) . I’m not entirely sure of the story, but I think there was a visit from an Angel who granted her wish to forget her Prince and turned him into a block of ice (randomly!). Dwynen was then granted three more wishes (quite greedy really, even Aladdin only got three!). The first was that the Prince be thawed out, the second that the hopes and dreams of all true lovers be met and the third was that she would never have to marry. Quite a sad story really.

So, I hope you all get in the spirit of Dydd Santes Dwynen, maybe buy your loved one something special (but small, after all the offical big day is only 2 weeks away) on the way home, or give them an extra bit ‘cwtch’ (cuddle) when you get home tonight. There’s not enough love in the world, I think we should take all we can get!

Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen hapus i bawb! Cwtches all round 🙂

  1. Wow, who (outside of Wales) knew such a day even existed? I certainly didn’t, such a sad story but heartwarming in some ways. Sweet!
