Day 9 take 2… ‘If igloos were indescribable!’

Katy just gave me an idea, to try and write a blog post which embodies all three themes for today, indescribable sights, the poem ‘If’ and different types of accommodation…here’s my attempt!

If you can pause when you are faced with beauty
The likes of which your eyes have never seen,
If you can stop to ponder by the blue sea,
And wonder where those shells and rocks have been.
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Instead take the time and soak the atmosphere
And fill your days with swims and walks and skating,
To try it all and not be stopped by fear:

If you’re open and sincere when meeting others
Whose backgrounds are a world apart from yours,
If you can learn to treat them as your brothers
To learn and live and laugh and not close doors,
If you would spend your sleep amongst the starlight,
Or climb a tree and spend the night up there,
Or build a rounded house from ice and then just delight
In northern lights, the cold and polar bears.

If you would travel right across the ocean
To find a bed that’s far beneath the waves,
If this you do and not show apprehension
Then climb a cliff to sleep amongst the caves,
If you can trust in going to an airport
Then signing yourself up to the first flight,
Arrive at destination with no forethought
But adventure, experience, that’s quite right!

If you can find a way to tell the story,
Of the sights and tales and sounds you can’t describe,
If you can simply tell it, not for glory,
And ignore it when the jealous people jibe,
If you can take it, just that very first step
And delight in many others yet to come
Then yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it
And – which is more – you’ll be a traveller, job done!

What do you think?

    • Awww shucks, made me blush!

I’m glad you liked it, took a few attempts to get started but I’m pretty pleased with the result. This was another of the prompts from that writing workshop I did last year, like the fill in the blanks thing. I wrote a Glastonbury version last time but I think this one is better.

Love that it’s on the notice board 😀

  2. I’m…speechless. I got tears in my eyes and everything (because apparently that’s the most amount of crying I can do these days).

I’m stunned and shocked and amazed and this is just bloody fantastic, seriously amazing and it’s got such a great feel to it, really, really, really well done.

Now I want to put it on my noticeboard too…though I don’t have a noticeboard…and though I want to go and buy some cork and make my own, I don’t want to have to go to Hobbycraft because I’ve spent too much money recently.

Anyway…maybe I’ll put it in my happy thoughts thingum that you gave me!
